Lobbyist Tony Podesta files for divorce from wife

Connecticut residents who follow the lives of some of the major players in Washington, D.C., might be interested in the recent Podesta divorce proceedings. Tony and Heather Podesta were once one of the most intriguing and formidable married couples inside the Beltway. As super-lobbyists, he was a Democratic operative at one time and she was a Democratic Hill staffer. His brother was the White House Chief of Staff under Bill Clinton’s presidency and is currently President Obama’s counselor. They lived in Kalorama, had quite an art collection and hosted ostentatious parties.

The couple split up in 2013, and Mr. Podesta has filed divorce papers in D.C. Superior Court on April 3 after 11 years of marriage. According to the court filing, he is accusing his wife of being deceptive about the possibility of a reconciliation just to get him to provide half of the down payment on an expensive home in March, despite the fact that she allegedly had already become involved with another man.

In addition, he is accusing her of trying to harass and embarrass him for the purpose of gaining financial leverage, according to the court filing. He is requesting retention of property owned prior to the marriage, which includes homes in Australia, Italy, Virginia and Washington. There is also a sizable art collection involved. In the court papers, he is proposing an equitable distribution of all debt and property accumulated while they were married.

This couple was considered to be best friends at the time of their initial separation, according to the couple themselves, and just one year seems to have made a big difference. When a separation goes from amicable to contested, a family law attorney could help determine the value of a couple’s marital assets and aid in determining an equitable property division.
