Why some wait till January to divorce

It is no secret that January tends to be a month where a higher number of divorces are initiated. In fact, some believe that the first month of the year is where the most divorces are started. Because of this, if you are contemplating a divorce, you are certainly not alone. But the question remains, why is January such a popular month for divorces?

This post will explore some the reasons behind this phenomenon.

A New Year’s resolution – On explanation is that some may want to start off the New Year with a fresh start…away from their spouse. Because of this, the first thing to do is to begin the process of dissolving a relationship. Call it an emotional pick-me-up or staying true to oneself, starting the year with a divorce appears to pay dividends when Valentine’s Day comes around.

The holidays are important – For other couples, making it through the holiday season is important. These couples may have children and feel that the holidays are important for making happy memories, and they worry that fighting, or litigating a dissolution, puts such a damper on the season that kids may be permanently scarred.

The financial incentives – While divorce is the legal ending of a romantic relationship, it is also the end of a financial relationship. Because of this, some couples may look to January to begin the proceedings because they want to take advantage of factoring a spouse’s year-end bonus into the equation. Also, having a full year where one can file taxes under “married filing separately” is an incentive.
