Connecticut parents charged following childs death

For many families in Connecticut, the well-being and safety of their children comes first. Typically, this is the case whether or not the parents are engaged in a custody battle, which can frequently be the result of parents making the decision to divorce. Sometimes, parents face difficult decisions which hopefully end up in the child’s best interest. However, what happens when parents don’t necessarily have their children’s best interests at heart?

This was the unfortunate case in Norwich, Connecticut. After participating in a yearlong inquiry into the death of a 14-year-old boy, police arrested the deceased’s mother and father on child abuse charges. Allegedly, the 59-year-old parents failed to properly treat their son’s severe case of pneumonia, which authorities believe led to his death. The boy’s 16-year-old brother was also ill, but fortunately survived his bout with the illness.

When the Department of Children and Families began their investigation into the family, they quickly discovered that the boy had several additional siblings, most of whom appeared to be ill-kept and malnourished. After the parents were arrested and charged, the remaining children were removed into the custody of DCF. According to the report by the DCF, the children rarely socialized with neighbors and were home-schooled. The parents were released after promising to appear in the Superior Court.

Although this is certainly an unusual and very complex case, many parents facing difficult custody battles can relate to the challenges of institutions becoming involved with their custody disputes. It is never easy when law enforcement decides to keep a child away from her parents. That’s why, if you’re facing any kind of custody battle, it is important to educate yourself about Connecticut laws. This can be imperative to demonstrating to authorities that you are a fit and capable parent, and improve your chances of regaining custody of your child.
